Lead Partner

The Institute for Sustainability Engagement (ISE) at Syracuse University, formerly known as the Center for Sustainable Community Solutions (CSCS) educates, engages, and empowers communities to deliver sustainable materials management (SMM) solutions to conserve resources and limit reliance on landfilling or incineration. The ISE team provides outreach and engagement, education, communications and design, technical assistance, event facilitation, stewardship programming and municipal assistance.

ISE works primarily throughout New York and Puerto Rico, and also leads national and global programs to assist with the sustainable management of materials.

Partners

Alfred University Center for Glass Innovation

Addressing opportunities and challenges around glass recycling in New York State.

Goals of the project include:
• Understanding material flows and economic drivers for glass recycling in New York
• Quantifying potential collection networks that match sources and sinks
• Improving the quality of glass cullet available for recycling through various methods
• Identifying and testing novel sinks for low quality cullet
• Performing atomic scale simulation and high temperature characterization to understand mechanisms underlying solutions
• Recommending regulatory policy changes to facilitate the recycling of glass.

SUNY Stony Brook Department of Technology and Society

Performing characterization studies of recyclables and waste that analyze how these materials are processed to create more marketable materials.

Goals of the project include:
• Solid waste characterization study
• Analyze how waste and recyclables are processed
• Work to determine efficiency of recycling programs across the state
• Determine what recyclable materials remain in the waste stream
• User friendly economic analysis tool for municipalities to determine the cost of recycling programs
• Conduct case studies on single stream recycling
• Analyze first order recycling programs and the circular economy

University at Buffalo New York State Center for Plastics Recycling Research & Innovation

Convergent science based, multidisciplinary initiative addressing a range of contemporary issues related to plastics recycling, with the goal of advancing plastics recycling in New York State and beyond.

Goals of the project include:
Understanding logistics and supply chain issues, economics and efficiency in collecting and processing plastics.
• Detailed understanding and mitigation of plastics in natural environments, including, water and wastewater, and in the agriculture, food and medical industries.
• Advanced understanding and applications of behavioral science to plastics recycling behaviors and developing impactful campaigns to encourage recycling and to recycle correctly.
• Developing leading process and technology for high-speed plastics sorting.
• Developing a process to determine percentage of recycled plastic content in products.

Partner Associations

  • Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI)

GBCI is the premier organization for independently recognizing excellence in green business industry performance and practice globally, through third party verification services for certification and credentialing.

Administered by Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI), TRUE (Total Resource Use and Efficiency) strives to change the way materials flow through society so that all products are eventually reused and diverted from landfill, incineration (waste-to-energy) and the environment.

  • New York State Association for Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling (NYSAR3)

NYSAR3 is New York’s premier membership-based advocacy organization focused on advancing sustainable materials management through education and networking opportunities for waste reduction professionals in the state.

With members spanning all regions and sectors, the organization brings together diverse perspectives to advance a healthier and more sustainable materials management landscape in New York.

  • Product Stewardship Institute (PSI)

The Product Stewardship Institute is a policy advocate and consulting nonprofit that powers the emerging circular economy to ensure products are responsibly managed from design to end of life. In 2000, PSI pioneered product stewardship in the United States by convening diverse stakeholders to build extended producer responsibility (EPR) policies, programs, and laws. Drawing on global best practices and expansive multinational relationships, PSI’s expert testimony and model legislation have helped enact 130 EPR laws in 33 states across 16 product categories, including packaging. PSI members include state, local, and tribal governments in 48 states, and partners with businesses, academic institutions, environmental nonprofits, and international governments. Together, PSI advances scalable solutions that protect people and the planet.

  • New York Product Stewardship Council (NYPSC)

The New York Product Stewardship Council works to implement the principles of product stewardship in New York State and nationally. These policies shift waste management costs off taxpayers and into the cost of the product while reducing waste destined for landfills and waste to energy facilities. Product stewardship improves product and packaging design for recycling and materials recovery and spurs economic development in new industries and job growth within New York State.
